Co-producer Bruce Iglauer anticipated a future trend by making this a set filled with cameos – but the presence of Lonnie Brooks, James Cotton, Albert Collins, and Son Seals is entirely warranted and the contributions of each work quite well in the context of the whole. Taylor's gritty "I Cried like a Baby" and a snazzy remake of Ann Peebles' "Come to Mama" are among the many highlights.

Every once in a while an artist seems to come out of nowhere and blow away expectations. Most of the time that artist is not 20 years old. Hannah Wicklund fronts the Steppin Stones at age 20 and what’s crazy is Wicklund started the band when she was just eight years old! In 2017, Greta Van Fleet burst onto the scene to garner the attention of rock and roll fans young and old. In 2018, we might see the same from Hannah Wicklund and the Steppin Stones.

Warren Haynes has been almost ubiquitous since he joined the Allman Brothers Band, and formed Gov't Mule with Allen Woody and Matt Abts. He's played and collaborated with everyone from the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan to Little Milton and Taj Mahal. Fans might be surprised to learn that Southern soul was an early love. But they shouldn't be. Man in Motion is Haynes' first conscious effort and to fully indulge his love for this music, and his first solo record with backing musicians since 1993. Co-produced with Gordie Johnson, Man in Motion boasts a stellar cast: George Porter, Jr. on bass, Ivan Neville on organ, clavinet, and backing vocals, Ian McLagan on Wurlitzer and piano, drummer Raymond Weber, tenor saxophonist Ron Holloway, and backing vocalist Ruthie Foster.

When pearls are found, the least thing is to emphasize it. And it is indeed the case between Yvan Guillevic and Anne Sorgues. The first is one of Brittany's best guitarists, while the other is a Gospel mistress. The meeting seems obvious and surprising too. Beyond the divisions, this duo had to be! One comes from Rock, and the other from Gospel: an obvious alchemy, finally. Full of tenderness and lightness, the album "Do it your way" shows us the way … of a precise and terribly effective music.

In 2012, a freshly remastered and neatly polished release entitled Spring 1990: So Glad You Made It surfaced, a highlights reel of live performances from an increasingly polished and technologically minded Grateful Dead. While still just trucking through the years by then, the Dead had all but forgotten about studio albums, choosing to focus their energy much more on touring and honing a live show that included more glaringly synthetic keyboards and experimenting with the interface of organic instruments and MIDI processing.

I cannot for the life of me find a thing wrong or amiss with this cd. I've been playing it for years and always love it. I know all about Canned Heat's tragic and illustrious past, and I'm not knocking those old records (most of them were great); but, it should be said by someone - the Canned Heat albums beginning with "Reheated" straight to the present - leave the old ones in the dust. Leaving behind the excessive reverence for the past (if you can, and you know who you are), there's one thing that has never changed about this band.

For many decades, African-American churches have worried about losing their best singers to secular music. And inevitably, many of them will, in fact, explore secular music instead of devoting 100 percent of their time to gospel. Al Smith is a perfect example. The obscure singer's roots were gospel, but he favored a jazz-influenced approach to blues and soul when he recorded two albums for Prestige/Bluesville: Hear My Blues in 1959 and Midnight Special in 1960. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's famous New Jersey studio, Midnight Special finds Smith backed by a rock-solid quintet that consists of King Curtis on tenor sax, Robert Banks on organ, Jimmy Lee Robinson on electric guitar, Leonard Gaskin on acoustic bass, and Bobby Donaldson on drums.

Chris was born in Washington, DC, and raised in Massachusetts on down-home cooking as well as on blues, jazz, rhythm & blues, and gospel music by his New York City dad and North Carolina mom. Before starting to play guitar at fourteen years old, he studied in Germany, where his dad was a visiting professor of American and African American Cultural Studies. Later, as an art and music major at the University of Massachusetts, Chris participated in jazz workshops with Archie Shepp and in a summer session at Berklee. He also studied guitar with Tony MacAlpine. His major influences range from B.B. King and Albert Collins to Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
