An acoustic trio, the Lost Fingers were based in Quebec City, Canada, and were known for their love of classic gypsy jazz and '80s pop hits. Their shows were a blending of both – seemingly disparate – styles, seeing the band cover hit '80s tunes as well as playing homage to such jazz legends as Django Reinhardt. Their reputation and skill won them a great many fans very quickly, and the group was to be found not too long after forming, playing some of the world's best-known festivals, including a ten-night stand at the Montreal Jazz Festival.

Since The Big Chill, too often directors and film producers have taken the easy way out in creating soundtracks for their big-budget Hollywood movies by licensing a couple handfuls of hits either from the catalog of yesteryear's pop giants or from hungry up-and-comers. It's a formula almost. Thankfully there are still film scores, though they all seem to be written by the same five men. Both of these poles sees to lie in stark contrast to Robert Rodriguez's approach to creating an audio environment both to accompany and stand apart from his films. On Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Rodriquez took matters into his own hands and procured a series of rather obscure existing tracks that viscerally underscore defined themes in his movie – such as Juno Reactor's "Pistolero," Brian Setzer's ass-kicking "Malagueña," and Manu Chao's "Me Gustas Tu." He also commissioned several tracks to actors and wrote others for his players. Thus Tito Larriva's haunting "Flor de Mal," or Johnny Depp and friends under the moniker Tonto's Giant Nuts offer "Sands Theme," while Rubén Blades and Antonio Banderas helped to flesh out their own character's themes musically as well as dramatically.

His masterful playing, brilliant choreography, moving orchestral pieces, couture fashion, and the unparalleled beauty of the Gitanas dancers gives Spanish dance a luminous makeover. Journey to worlds both far away and deeply personal, and remember that hope can be the healing thread in all of our lives.

Astrud Gilberto, the Brazilian canary with the voice like honey and diction that defied belief, has been compiled many times on Verve, but rarely as well as on her entry in 2003's The Diva Series. A 21-track of her prime decade, the '60s, this one includes all of the classics associated with her: "The Girl From Ipanema," "Agua de Beber," "Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)," "So Nice (Summer Samba)," and "Dindi." Not all of her LPs have been reissued on CD (in the States), so the compilers also added tracks that may surprise a few Gilberto fans, like "Eu e Voce" and "Canto de Ossanha (Let Go)."

On this excellent set, the Brazilian acoustic guitarist/singer Toninho Horta plays unaccompanied solos. Horta wrote or co-composed every song, and his program is full of rich themes, haunting understated vocalizing (often wordless), and melodic guitar. The atmospheric performances, which are as much folk as jazz, work both as background music and for close listening. Overall, this is one of Toninho Horta's better efforts.

Toninho Horta comes from the State of Minas Gerais in Brazil, from the same place and the same group of composers and musicians which gave us Milton Nascimento. Some of the most notable songs recorded by Nascimento are Horta's compositions, featuring "Beijo Partido" in Nascimento's album "Minas". This was a Horta's album recorded in 1989 for Verve Forecast. His inspiration on beautiful songs and sophisticated arrangements are all there. Also Pat Metheny plays the title song "Moonstone" in a guitar duo with Horta in this CD.

A fusion of Cuban salsa and American soul, boogaloo was the brightly burning dance craze fixating every young dancer in New York’s barrios in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Boogaloo was born out of the creativity of the 1960s generation of USA-born Latinos, who musically grafted American culture on to their Latin roots, leading many established Latin bandleaders to adopt the dance to irresistible results. The Rough Guide To Boogaloo is packed full of classic boogaloo firecrackers from Tito Puente, Charlie Palmieri, Ray Barretto, Joe Cuba and others.
