MP3 CBR 320kbps | Tracks: 4 | 43:37 min | 102 Mb
Style: Jazz | Label: International Anthem

Potent free jazz group Irreversible Entanglements originated in 2015, when poet/vocalist Camae Ayewa (aka Moor Mother), saxophonist Keir Neuringer, and bassist Luke Stewart performed at an event organized by Musicians Against Police Brutality. Among the other performers were drummer Tcheser Holmes and trumpeter Aquiles Navarro, who joined the trio shortly thereafter for one day of recording at Seizures Palace in Brooklyn. Two songs composed by the instrumentalists, and one each by Neuringer and Stewart – with Ayewa fronting all four with her intense, distressed, and defiantly delivered spoken word – were issued as a self-titled album in 2017. The digital edition was issued that September, followed two months later by vinyl and compact disc pressings through a partnership between the International Anthem and Don Giovanni labels.

Irreversible Entanglements are a liberation-oriented free jazz collective formed in early 2015 by saxophonist Keir Neuringer, poet Camae Ayewa (a.k.a. Moor Mother) and bassist Luke Stewart, who came together to perform at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event organized after the slaying of Akai Gurley by the NYPD. Months later the group added trumpeter Aquiles Navarro and drummer Tcheser Holmes (a duo who also performed at the MAPB event) for a single day of recording at Seizure’s Palace in Brooklyn, and the full quintet’s first time playing together was captured for this debut.

The cover of every CIMP CD contains a “statement of purpose” describing the imprint’s m.o. and including the mandate, “Give [the disc] your undivided attention and it will reward you. CIMP records are not intended to be background music.” These words should be kept in mind, especially while listening to Ancestral Link Hotel’s 21-minute title track. Byard Lancaster begins with a chant and a wail, pulls out the Afro flute for some quick runs and eventually picks up his alto. Drummer Harold E. Smith starts on conch shell and didgeridoo. Two bassists, Bert Harris and Ed Crockett, provide spare but percussive drones that come and go as needed. Anyone expecting “something to happen” misses the point. Anyone listening closely will be swept up by the organic flow of the music.

On this free jazz date the powerful tenor Frank Lowe teams up with trumpeter Leo Smith, trombonist Joseph Bowie, bassist Alex Blake and drummer Charles Bobo Shaw for five group originals including the collaboration "Third St. Stomp." The very explorative and rather emotional music holds one's interest throughout. These often heated performances are better heard than described.

One of our favorite all-time records, and a real lost album on Blue Note! Eddie Gale leads this group of righteous singers and musicians through five fantastic tracks of soulful chanting and hard jazz playing that never goes too far out, but always threatens to break free of its own chains – soaring to the skies on wings of freedom and spirituality! Gale's trumpet rings hard and loud, and the vocal arrangements never verge on sentimentality, but manage to convey a ton of soul with an incredibly righteous approach that's never been duplicated again! Imagine Donald Byrd's vocal group albums recorded for Strata East – or a hipper version of Billy Harper's Capra Black – and you've only got part of the picture! Titles include "The Rain", "Fulton Street", "The Coming Of Gwilu", and "A Walk With Thee".

Sync might be envisioned as a modified sax/bass/drum trio, where the bassist has been replaced by Jerome Harris on either acoustic guitar or acoustic bass guitar, and where the drummer’s role is taken by Samir Chatterjee on tabla and dumbek. With Rothenberg moving among alto sax, clarinet, bass clarinet, and the Japanese shakuhachi and composing looping ribbons of melody with odd rhythmic contours, the trio has found a most palatable merger of jazz and Asian music. The uncommon instrumentation is enhanced by a shared sense of purpose that gives Sync its winning character. Each player displays both the techniques and the sensitivity required to function as both soloist and accompanist, allowing Sync to maintain its three-way conversations after Rothenberg has finished soloing. This is not simply a matter of the leader’s ability to sustain extended melodic and rhythmic variations at lower volumes through circular breathing; it also results from the assurance that allows Harris to sustain a pronounced rhythmic underpinning in his guitar work and rare melodic fluency on bass. Chatterjee, who can sing and then play back the most complex patterns in the manner of the great tabla masters, also senses how to highlight more compact, swing-oriented parts through shifts in accents and dynamics.

Here is another gem from the Norwegian scene, showing us that music can be energetic and melodic at the same time, as it was proposed by free jazz mavericks like Ornette Coleman, Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders and John Carter. The songs are even more melodic than those played by the bands in which we find André Roligheten, Thomas Johansson, Oscar Grönberg, Jon Rune Strøm and Tollef Østvang, namely Team Hegdal, Frode Gjerstad Trio, Cortex and All Included, and even the intensity and density of the music seems more compact and in-your-face. The overall sound is the same of the most traditional jazz, and that is intentional and even programmatic, but you won’t find chord progressions in the new “What’s Wrong?”. Jazz can survive to its own stereotypes, and this collective has that notion as a purpose. The music is free, faithful to its historical references, but also disciplined, with no sounds in excess or missing and, above all, with none of the usual tics and tricks keeping the musicians in a comfort zone. Grab it before it vanishes.

Tenor saxophonist George Adams' third recording as a leader (following two obscure releases for the Italian Horo label) is a little unusual in that the extroverted soloist is heard on the usually introverted ECM label. Adams is teamed with fellow tenor Heinz Sauer (who has a cooler sound), trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, pianist Richard Beirach, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Jack DeJohnette for five group originals. The playing is advanced but not as fiery as most of Adams' later sets.

This quartet represents the collaboration of two of the most distinctive voices of their generation, and stakes out a remarkable common ground from the pairs vast range of influences and experience. The repertoire fuses Elaine Mitcheners unique way with both melody and abstraction, with Alexander Hawkins idiosyncratic compositional and pianistic world; as well as spotlighting reimaginings of a small number of beautiful Jazz tunes which reveal the influence of precursors such as Jeanne Lee and Archie Shepp.
