The aptly titled and much-sampled Feels So Good represents the creative apex of Grover Washington, Jr.'s sublime electric funk sound. Its shimmering, soulful grooves refute the argument that smooth jazz is little more than mere ambience, combining expert playing and intricate songwriting to create music that is both compelling and comforting. Arranger Bob James is in top form here, creating the spacious, rich milieus that are his trademark, but regardless of the name above the title, bassist Louis Johnson is the real star of the show. His supple rhythms percolate like coffee, adding oomph to the bottom of highlights "Hydra" and "Knucklehead" while Washington's cream-and-sugar soprano sax solos soar over the top.

Egg were exponents of the so-called "Canterbury" style of Folk/Rock music and were focused around the compositional and keyboard playing skills of Dave Stewart (later in Hatfield & The North) and Mont Campbell and Clive Brooks. In 1974, they recorded their final album for the Virgin Record label. Featuring guest musicians such as Steve Hillage (Gong) and members of Henry Cow, The Civil Surface is now regarded as a classic of the "Canterbury" and "Progressive" genres. This Esoteric Recordings release has been remastered from the original tapes and is certain to the many who made the reissues of Egg’s previous work such a success.

Chilean band Embrujo's lone self-titled album, originally released in 1971, is one of those records that was beyond the grasp of the public at large for decades, unless you wanted to fork over an unreasonable amount of money for it. Progressive rock was still in its embryonic stages in 1971, and even though the Summer of Love was already receding into the mists of history, psychedelia still had some steam left, probably even more so in South America, where there was still a bit of a time lag for Anglo-American musical influences to take root. In fact, Embrujo had already released an album in the late ‘60s under the name Kissing Spell…

Entertainment! is the debut album by English post-punk band Gang of Four, released in September 1979. The music on the first album shows clearly the influence of punk, yet also incorporates funk and less-obvious influences of reggae and dub, similar to other bands at the time such as Public Image Ltd., Pere Ubu, and The Pop Group. As with these other influential post-punk bands, the bass is mixed much more prominently than it typically is in rock or punk. In 2003, the album was ranked number 490 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Kurt Cobain listed it in his top fifty albums of all time.

Argentinean group Vox Dei started playing by the end of the 1960s. After signing up to independent label Mandioca, the band released "Azucar Amarga" and "Presente" in 1969; a year later, they issued the album Caliente. Vox Dei's conceptual album La Biblia, released in 1971, consolidated the band as one of the major local rock numbers. When Juan Carlos Godoy decided to leave the act, Ignacio Smilari joined in. Soon after Jeremias, Pies De Plomo came out, Vox Dei participated in a movie called Rock Hasta Que Se Ponga El Sol. In 1974, guitarist Carlos Michelini replaced Ricardo Soulé. The group disbanded after a live performance at Buenos Aires' Obras Sanitarias in 1981, returning in 1988 to make a new record called Tengo Razones Para Seguir.

There's very little to distinguish Lucky Seven from Heads, Sign of the Times, Touchdown and other forgettable studio albums that Bob James recorded in the late 1970s. The keyboardist had carved out a niche for himself playing uncreative background music, and he obviously felt that the easiest way to maintain his commercial success was to make sure one studio project was as contrived and formulaic as the next. Despite employing such talented musicians as Michael & Randy Brecker, Eric Gale and Steve Khan, Lucky Seven is remarkably boring. "Rush Hour" and "Big Stone City" sound like 1970s movie music at its corniest, and the adult contemporary number "Friends" is unbearably insipid. Whether you're looking for jazz, R&B, disco or pop, Lucky Seven is among the many James albums that should be avoided.

This CD reissue features some typical pop/jazz from keyboardist/arranger/composer Bob James. James often uses his musicians as a prop, adding some coloring by having short solos by Grover Washington, Jr.'s soprano (whose two appearances are easily this set's high points), and guitarists Hiram Bullock and Bruce Dunlap. An oversized rhythm section, a large horn section, and strings fail to uplift the pleasant but lightweight music much. James plays well enough but no real chances are taken on this obviously commercial effort.
