Egg were exponents of the so-called "Canterbury" style of Folk/Rock music and were focused around the compositional and keyboard playing skills of Dave Stewart (later in Hatfield & The North) and Mont Campbell and Clive Brooks. In 1974, they recorded their final album for the Virgin Record label. Featuring guest musicians such as Steve Hillage (Gong) and members of Henry Cow, The Civil Surface is now regarded as a classic of the "Canterbury" and "Progressive" genres. This Esoteric Recordings release has been remastered from the original tapes and is certain to the many who made the reissues of Egg’s previous work such a success.

In the late 80's he invited David Cross of King Crimson to join Radius whose up to this date 4 albums can be recommended to fans of jazz influenced art rock and ambient music, with some electronic and industrial atmosphere to it as well.

Hooking up with regular Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard as the co-producer of this album proved to be just the trick for Ferry. Bete Noire sparkles as the highlight of Ferry's post-Roxy solo career, adding enough energy to make it more than Boys and Girls part two. Here, his trademark well-polished heartache strikes a fine balance between mysterious moodiness and dancefloor energy, and Leonard adds more than a few tricks that keep the pep up. Five out of the nine songs are Ferry/Leonard collaborations; all succeed, from "Limbo"'s opening punch and flow to the cinematic (and unsurprisingly French-tinged) feeling of the title track. The atmospheric, almost chilling "Zamba"'s minimal, buried drums, soft synths and doomy piano, make it the best of that bunch. Ferry's best moment here is all his own, though – the great single "Kiss and Tell," with a steady, bold bassline leading the way for his slightly dissolute portrayal of mating rituals and all they entail. Like Boys and Girls, the album's supporting cast mixes a lengthy list of session pros with a few guest stars.

Cirrus Bay's "Whimsical Weather" refines the "Genesis-influenced neo-prog with a Renaissance-influenced vocalist" formula which Cirrus Bay had nailed down reasonably effectively on A Step Into Elsewhere (2009).
"Whimsical Weather" is the 3rd Cirrus Bay CD, and is a bit more lush, layered and complex than previous CDs. The feel of the outdoors is notable in the music, helped by the layered mix of acoustic and electric guitars, mellotron, organ, synths, and occasional mandolin.

Awesome instrumental prog from Russia from this band of seasoned veterans and their guests. This is a very eclectic album in that, as the title infers, each and every song incorporates a completely diverse style. It's like you mixed the Eastern European folk-filled good humour of Farm Market with the funky side of Vespero. Oft times one hears music themes that sound quite cinematic, with others riding the pulsating groove of a kind of Jamaican Krautrock ("Memories"), or a purer representative of the Kosmische Musik tradition ("Trip"), while others are flavored with the bounce of folk traditions ("Foolery" and "Me")…

Balancing breeziness with complexity, this ambitious Oakland, California-based avant-prog band led by Bill Wolter released its debut full-length, Rainbro, on AltrOck in 2012. Guitarist, composer, and Mills College music composition graduate Bill Wolter plays with various Bay Area bands, and formed this adventurous avant-prog outfit in Oakland, California around 2005. With a quartet lineup of guitar, keyboards, bass, and drums, Inner Ear Brigade self-released the four-song Belly Brain EP in the summer of 2005, citing such influences as Magma, Sun Ra, and Frank Zappa. With a change in bass players and the addition of a saxophonist, the band expanded to a quintet, remaining a five-piece until late in the decade, when Inner Ear Brigade grew even larger with vocalist Melody Ferris, saxophonist Ivor Holloway…

The Lie of the Beholder is the debut full-length solo CD by Roy STRATTMAN, better known to most as Little Atlas guitarist and joint composer Roy Strattman,. The Lie of the Beholder is a tour de force of cutting edge modern progressive rock - complex, tense, and shot through with dark and menacing textures alternating with unexpected stabs of beauty and organic calm. In addition to writing all of the material on the album, Strattman performs the guitar, keyboards, and vocals. The album features Nick D'Virgilio (Genesis, Kevin Gilbert, Spock's Beard, Mike Keneally, Tears for Fears) on drums, and Ricardo Bigai (Little Atlas, Supersam, Julio Iglesias) on bass, in addition to guest appearances by Steve Katsikas (Little Atlas, The Dark Side of the Wall) on piano and cajon.

French band Northwinds was formed back in 1990, initially calling themselves R.I.P. but altering to their current moniker in the mid 90's. Since then five full length albums have seen the light of day, of which "Winter" from 2012 is the fourth. As has been the case for all their productions, this CD was released through the Italian label Black Widow Records. If you're the kind of person that have Antonius Rex and Black Sabbath side by side in your music collection, enjoy the occasional Black Widow (the band) album or have a general affection for productions released by Black Widow (the label), Northwinds is a band you probably should investigate. And their latest production "Winter" appears to be a good choice in getting to know this band better.

Unripened is the title given to a bootleg of the Norman Dolph acetate of songs that would be recorded for the debut album by The Velvet Underground & Nico. Most of these versions are different from what would be released, and this is why the acetate had went for a lot of money when discovered in 2006.

To open this oddball supergroup's debut, Paul Simonon hints at "Guns of Brixton," and when Tony Allen's flex rhythms come in, there's a shadow of Fela Kuti, too. Then Damon Albarn's slow grit of a voice enters–framed by Simon Tong's flecked guitar. And collectively, The Good, the Bad, & the Queen is quickly sui generis, adamantly different than anything you think you've heard. A band with this much power has at least two options: to cut loose raucously or to mute their overt power for a more covert, dub-inflected atmospheric potency. Smartly, Albarn and his crew opt for the half-light of elastic bass lines, the clouds between the parentheses of drums–the covert. It's not until "Kingdom of Doom," the erstwhile 'single' of the album, that motion expands beyond the languorous. And even then, Tony Allen largely sits out. You get the full flush of Simonon and Allen on "Three Changes" shuffling time even while holding the tempo to a dubbish gait. It's not Blur, the Clash, Fela, the Verve, or Gorillaz. It's more than just names on albums.

Premiata Forneria Marconi (or P.F.M.) were arguably the finest Italian Progressive rock band of the 1970 s and certainly one of the most well known. A successful act in their home land, they came to international attention when they signed to Manticore label in 1973, recording a series of albums with English lyrics, some penned by Elp and King Crimson lyricist Pete Sinfield. Over the next four years they released four studio albums and a live recording for the label, and it is from these albums that this 2CD anthology is drawn. In addition, four previously unreleased live recordings from the Manticore vaults also grace this collection, along with the CD debut of a rare B-side to a UK single.
